Research Interests

Laurence’s primary research is focused on the identification of peptides and post-translation modifications using mass spectrometry data. He is currently working on a novel algorithm to perform blind peptide-spectrum alignment which is capable of identifying both known and unknown PTMs in a sample. Additionally, Laurence has interest in Imaging Mass spectrometry, Proteogenomics and general algorithm development.

Working with Dr. Bandeira, Laurence was responsible for creating the framework for the new spectral networks and shotgun protein sequencing software. He obtained his undergraduate degree in Computer Science from UCSD in 1988. Before returning to UCSD to pursue his PhD Laurence spent 25 years in the private sector as a software engineer and engineering manager. During that time he worked on a wide range of software development efforts as the both the head of his own software development firm and as an employee in other San Diego firms.
