CSE PhD student

Adrian Guthals

Adrian Guthals is a PhD Candidate in Computer Science at UC San Diego working with Dr. Nuno Bandeira on computational mass spectrometry. He also did his undergraduate studies at UCSD (2006-2010) in the field of Bioengineering and began his research at CCMS in his third year. Prior to joining the Bandeira Lab, he also did undergraduate research in database and user-interface design in the Bioengineering Department with Dr. Andrew McCulloch. As an undergraduate, he started for UCSD’s NCAA Division I/II Men’s Volleyball team and continues to enjoy playing volleyball on the beach. Remaining outdoor interests include hiking, kayaking, camping, and fishing.

Research Interests

Upon joining the Bandeira Lab, he began his research focusing on sequence identification of novel proteins, particularly monoclonal antibodies and uncharacterized venoms/toxins. He has since expanded into problems relating to both known and unknown protein identification.

Developed Software Tools:

  • De novo sequencing of unknown proteins: MetaSPS
